The Ashes: Todd Murphy ready for England attack in Sydney Test (2026)

The Ashes: Todd Murphy's Spin on Sydney's Spin-less Series

The Final Test in Sydney: A Spin-off?

As the Ashes series reaches its climax in Sydney, Australia's Todd Murphy is gearing up for a potential battle with the English attack. With Nathan Lyon's absence due to a hamstring injury, Murphy, the off-spinner, is in the running to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

In the 2023 Ashes, Murphy has already made his mark, despite facing some tough treatment in the third Test at Headingley. He ended up with seven wickets in the series, outperforming the rest of the Australian team in terms of average and strike-rate. Murphy's confidence is high, stating, 'I'd say it's a guarantee that if I play, they will be attacking against me.'

The SCG is known for its assistance to slow bowlers, with three of the four leading Test wicket-takers being Australian spinners. However, Murphy's inclusion is not a sure thing due to a mixed weather forecast and the limited impact of spin in this series. Only nine wickets have fallen to spin in four games, making it the series with the fewest wickets taken by spinners in an Ashes series of at least four Tests.

Murphy, who has taken 22 wickets in his seven Tests, believes in the importance of spin. He says, 'I still think there's a role to play for spin. You're not going to be thrown the ball and your role is to take wickets.'

The reduced role of spin in Tests in Australia over the past decade, due to green pitches and a Kookaburra ball favoring seamers, has been evident. Australia's number one spinner, Lyon, has seen a gradual decrease in the number of overs he bowls in home series. The fourth Test in Melbourne, won by England in two days, further highlighted the limited impact of spin, with no wickets falling to spin and England's Will Jacks not bowling.

Despite the challenges, Murphy remains optimistic. He adds, 'You've got to find ways to still be effective out there and still be able to play a role for what the team needs.'

With England making at least one change to their team after seamer Gus Atkinson's withdrawal, and Australia naming their provisional squad for the T20 World Cup, the final Test in Sydney promises to be an intriguing contest. Will Murphy's spin be the game-changer Australia needs? The answer lies in the spin of the SCG's weather forecast and the English attack's strategy.
