The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a critical component of Earth's climate system, yet it is under threat of being discontinued due to funding cuts. This is a dire situation, as the AMOC plays a crucial role in regulating global climate, and its weakening or collapse could have catastrophic consequences for Europe and the world. The AMOC is a vast system of ocean currents that moves heat from the south to the north in the Atlantic Ocean, and its changes can impact food security, coastal flooding, storms, energy demand, migration, and infrastructure planning. The current climate change is already causing the AMOC to weaken, and there is a risk of it collapsing, which could lead to climate change occurring up to 10 times faster than today. This is a terrifying prospect, as current climate change is already challenging to manage. The lack of long-term AMOC observations and the scarcity of data are hampering our understanding of the system and complicating matters for policymakers. The AMOC monitoring initiatives are at risk of being defunded, and the Trump administration has proposed budget cuts to NASA, NOAA, and NSF, which provide about 50% of the total AMOC monitoring budget. The European OceanEye initiative has allocated €50m for ocean observations, but it is not enough to sustain the current observing systems. The cost of all AMOC monitoring is about €25m a year, which is a small price to pay for the knowledge and resilience it provides. The AMOC monitoring should be treated as an urgent, global priority, and an alternative international funding strategy is needed to secure long-term AMOC monitoring. Without sustained AMOC observations, we cannot know what lies ahead, and the consequences of an AMOC collapse could be catastrophic. It is time for the EU, the UK, and other international partners to step up and collaborate to assure long-term continuation of AMOC monitoring before it is lost. Personally, I think that the AMOC monitoring is a critical component of our understanding of the climate system, and its discontinuation would be a tragedy. What makes this particularly fascinating is that the AMOC is a complex and dynamic system, and its behavior is influenced by a multitude of factors, including ocean temperature, salinity, and wind patterns. In my opinion, the AMOC monitoring is a vital tool for understanding and predicting climate change, and its loss would be a significant setback for science and society. From my perspective, the AMOC monitoring is a prime example of how scientific research can benefit society and improve our understanding of the world. One thing that immediately stands out is that the AMOC monitoring is a relatively new field, and its development has been hampered by funding issues. What many people don't realize is that the AMOC monitoring is not just a scientific pursuit, but it also has practical applications in fields such as agriculture, infrastructure planning, and energy demand management. If you take a step back and think about it, the AMOC monitoring is a critical component of our global climate system, and its loss would have far-reaching consequences. This raises a deeper question: how can we ensure that scientific research is adequately funded and supported, especially in fields that have practical applications and can benefit society? A detail that I find especially interesting is that the AMOC monitoring is a collaborative effort between researchers from different countries and institutions. What this really suggests is that scientific research is a global endeavor, and international cooperation is essential for making progress in understanding and addressing climate change. In conclusion, the AMOC monitoring is a critical component of our understanding of the climate system, and its discontinuation would be a tragedy. We must take action to ensure that it is sustained and supported, and that the knowledge it provides is used to build a safer and more resilient world.
