Sean O’Malley is looking forward to some downtime after his recent victory at UFC 324, where he triumphed over Song Yadong by unanimous decision in a match that turned out to be much more competitive than many anticipated. Before entering the octagon, O'Malley, known as "Suga," had confidently declared that he would put on such an impressive display against Song that the demand for a rematch with the current bantamweight champion Petr Yan would be undeniable.
However, the reality was somewhat different from his expectations. Now, O’Malley finds himself in the position of trying to generate enthusiasm for a rematch against Yan, a fight that many fans are skeptical about him winning again. At the post-fight press conference following UFC 324, O'Malley shared his thoughts on Yan's performance in his title-winning bout against Merab Dvalishvili.
"He looked really good," O'Malley commented. "If I want to stand a chance, I need to come fully prepared to go the full five rounds, stay focused, and improve my skills outside of training camp. He’s the champion for a reason, and I genuinely enjoy watching him fight, so competing against him again would be fantastic. But it’s clear that I need an excellent training camp to deliver an outstanding performance, something reminiscent of the old Suga."
O’Malley isn’t the only fighter in the bantamweight division eager for a shot at Yan’s title. Umar Nurmagomedov also made a bid for a title opportunity by fighting Deiveson Figueiredo on the preliminary card. Despite winning, Nurmagomedov’s performance was rather lackluster. However, it seems that Petr Yan has already been informed about his next steps, even before UFC 324 took place.
"Actually, my next fight is already set in stone," Yan revealed to reporters in Dubai on Friday night. "The UFC has assured Merab [Dvalishvili] that he will get his rematch. As soon as he is fully recovered, we will proceed. This could happen either in the spring or summer. We’re just waiting for the final confirmation from the UFC executives."
Even with this matchup confirmed, O'Malley believes he can patiently await his chance to face the winner.
"I’m just chilling," he stated. "If they go ahead with that fight, I’ll be here, ready to seize the opportunity."
Arriving at the post-fight press conference wearing a protective boot on his foot, O'Malley mentioned that while he expects to recover with some rest and a drink or two, he has been reflecting on whether the physical toll of training camps might force him to consider retirement sooner than he had hoped.
"This time, I actually felt pretty good physically," he admitted. "Teep kicks are my favorite technique; I truly enjoy them. Unfortunately, six weeks before my last fight against Merab, I ended up tearing ligaments in my toe from practicing teep kicks and was stuck in a boot for that duration. But I can’t complain too much since I’ve dealt with injuries in the past too.
"In this fight camp, I didn’t require any physical therapy throughout the week, which is unusual for me. Typically, I need treatment for minor injuries. This time, though, I felt great, and it was refreshing to experience that. Injuries are undoubtedly one of the toughest challenges in sports, particularly in fighting, where being physically fit is crucial for enduring training camps. It can be overwhelming at times.
"As long as my body continues to hold up, I want to keep fighting. Luckily, it cooperated this camp, and I felt strong.
