Exciting Expansion Plans for Hereford's Green Dragon Hotel! (2026)

Get ready for an exciting update from the historic city of Hereford! The renowned Green Dragon Hotel, a true landmark, is set to expand its guest accommodations to meet the rising demand for visitor stays.

This three-star, Grade II-listed hotel, nestled in Broad Street, has submitted a planning application and is seeking permission to transform six underutilized first-floor spaces into five luxurious bedrooms and suites, each with its own en-suite bathroom.

Among these new additions, the historic Judge's Office, with its stunning timber panelling and ornate ceiling, will be a real highlight. The hotel's application highlights the attention to detail, with intricate window and door designs throughout.

But here's where it gets controversial: all rooms will require significant upgrades to meet fire, acoustic, thermal, and ventilation standards. Despite this, the hotel believes these changes will provide financial stability and attract even more locals and visitors to this iconic establishment.

"The rooms have a rich history, but they've been largely unused," says Julian Vaughan, the hotel's managing director. "We're committed to preserving the architecture, and that's been a key focus in our planning."

While the hotel has faced challenges with business events during and after the Covid pandemic, Hereford continues to be a popular destination for overnight guests.

"Our surveys with Visit Herefordshire have shown a clear need for more visitor accommodation in the city," Vaughan adds. "There are peak periods, especially during early and late summer, when demand exceeds supply, and visitors are forced to look elsewhere, even though they'd prefer to stay in the city."

And this is the part most people miss: just a few doors down, the city's new museum and art gallery is taking shape, which Mr. Vaughan believes will be a game-changer for Hereford's regeneration.

What do you think about this proposed expansion? Do you agree that Hereford needs more high-quality visitor accommodation to support its growing tourism economy? Or do you have concerns about the potential impact on the city's historic architecture and character?
