Bill Belichick's influence and the relationships he fostered in Chapel Hill have led to a significant commitment from safety Chuck Roberts, who is set to join North Carolina's football program in 2027. The talented athlete from California, currently at IMG Academy, made his announcement during the Christmas break, surrounded by family, which added a touching layer of significance to his decision.
Roberts shared that North Carolina’s interest in him intensified right after Coach Belichick came on board. "North Carolina reached out to me almost immediately when coach Belichick arrived. They offered me right away and have shown consistent support ever since. I’ve developed strong connections with everyone there; the coaching staff is exceptional, and during my visit for the Stanford game, I really felt like I was at home,” Roberts remarked during an interview with Rivals.
That visit to North Carolina was truly a turning point for him. "Attending that game against Stanford was crucial for me. The vibe was distinct. I walked away from that experience thinking this could be my future home. Everything felt right — the welcome I received, what I learned about the program, and how I envisioned fitting into their defensive scheme. The atmosphere was just perfect for me.”
Although North Carolina was already a leading option for Roberts, that visit solidified the Tar Heels’ position at the top of his list. The presence and reputation of Coach Belichick also played a pivotal role in his decision-making process. "Coach Belichick is among the best in the game. I don’t need to say much more; his track record speaks volumes. With his success and the expertise of his coaching team, I know they can significantly enhance my skills. I genuinely trust these coaches to help me evolve into a first-round draft pick," Roberts stated confidently.
Feeling ready to make his choice, Roberts ultimately selected North Carolina over a competitive field that included programs like Florida, Miami, Missouri, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. Yet, he felt that the Tar Heels distinguished themselves in meaningful ways.
"This was the right moment for me," Roberts explained. "I wasn’t sure when I would make my commitment, but it just clicked. Coach Belichick consistently reached out and made me feel valued. I want to be part of what he is building in Chapel Hill.
"North Carolina is where I feel most comfortable. They treated me and my family with great respect. I believe in their player development approach, and I genuinely feel at home there."
Roberts will bring a blend of versatility and impressive performance to the secondary at North Carolina. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds, he had a standout season in 2025, recording 50 tackles, three pass breakups, two sacks, and one interception, while allowing only three receptions throughout the entire season. His achievements highlight his athletic range, physicality, and dependability in the defensive backfield.
